Title: Dinner, Later
Characters: House & Wilson
Rating: PG
Spoilers: For 8.01 and 8.02
Words: Double drabble - 200
Genre: Angst, hurt/comfort
Summary: After the events of 8.02 - Transplant Wilson picks up dinner. House enjoys it. Written for the Seven Deadly Sins challenge - Gluttony

Wilson picks up their dinner. There's not just steak, but two types of vegetables, a mound of roast potatoes, and a sauce to pour over it all. House devours it greedily. He barely pauses for breath as he shovels it in, enjoying both food and company.

"Didn't they feed you in prison?" Wilson jokes, his tone light but his eyes serious as he stares at House, his own dinner barely touched.

House stops mopping up sauce dregs with his bread roll. He thinks about barely edible food, prepared by other prisoners, of having to eat with one eye on everyone else, the other eye on his food, of a can of tuna being considered a luxury, bought with his meagre janitor's wage. He can't tell Wilson any of that, he doesn't want to bring that world here. Their renewed friendship is fragile, House can't trust it. He looks down at his empty plate, the silence suddenly heavy.

When he looks up Wilson pushes his plate towards him, offering his potatoes and carrots up for sacrifice. House helps himself to a forkful, feeling a warmth inside that has nothing to do with the good food.

Thanks for reminding us of yet another facet of what is included in prison as punishment. Totally IC that House doesn't want to talk about it, and that Wilson still 'gets it'.
Definitely a missing scene. Extra heartbreak point for the mentioned foods all being quite normal, everyday stuff.

I figure prison food is probably about as good as hospital food, certainly that tray in solitary didn't look very appetising.

Thanks for reading :)

This was great! Makes me sad thinking about what House must have gone through in there. The ending is perfect.

Like others said, your drabble conveys beautifully what House went through in prison--the lack of good food and Wilson. :-)

Such a simple but powerful way to show that there is still that connection and understanding after everything that has happened. Wilson shows subtly his understanding and his affection by offering his food instead of waiting for House to steal it (which House probably wouldn't have done since the relationship is so 'fragile'. Just wonderful!

I really loved this one. The description of food in prison was heartbreaking, but Wilson's gentle understanding and sacrifice was perfect and made me smile. I love that neither had to say a word there. Lovely work and great job :)

The lack of Wilson was probably the hardest of all - although he did find a sort of wilson-substitute :) Thanks for reading!

Thanks, glad you liked it :) I think you're right, House wouldn't have taken the food if it wasn't offered - not that night anyway.
