Well, it could have been worse - I could have thrown Wilson to the actual lions :-) Probably no way to control the lions to make sure they only did just the right amount of damage though.
No, I've never read Dark Materials (although I've read fanfic based on it, which was moderately confusing :)
That's an interesting point about your mother - yeah, caning was still in schools (boys only!) when I was a child - I never thought about the person who had to do it, but as you say, it was perfectly acceptable and considered part of the job.
It would be interesting to see what Cuddy thinks when Wilson comes back - she's never ordered this sort of punishment before.
