Title: Another Five Months
Characters: House, Wilson
Rating: PG
Spoilers: The final arc up to and including the finale.
Words: Double drabble (200)
Summary: Sometimes House is wrong.

As quite often happened, House was wrong. Five months to the day after he gave Wilson his death sentence he pulled out a crisp one hundred dollar bill and slammed it down in front of him.

Wilson looked up at him, surprised. "You're voluntarily paying off a bet? No..." he waved his hand around theatrically, "no technicalities that you can use to wriggle out of it?"

House scowled, and then plopped himself down besides Wilson on the couch, helping himself to a handful of Wilson's fries, a swig of his beer, and one of his pain pills. He closed his eyes for a moment as the pill travelled down his throat, Wilson had the good stuff alright. He looked at Wilson. "There's a jazz festival in Arizona next month, thought we might head over there."

Wilson nodded, "sounds good, but this time we're driving, I want to get there in one piece." He fingered the hundred dollar bill, went to tuck it away in his wallet and then laid it back down on the table. "Go again?"

"Double or nothing?"

Wilson raised his beer bottle in silent salute to House. "You're on. Another five months."

Just amazing, and utterly IC. The bet says so much while they say so little.

"Double or nothing" -- yes! So completely, perfectly, their brand of ironic humor. Wonderful!

I like this a lot. Nicely done and so IC for both of them. I know it's a drabble, but more please, perhaps? :)

Nice to see you over here :) More? Honestly I was glad just to be able to write this, I've been awfully stuck since the finale...

Wonderfully IC, as always. This: "You're voluntarily paying off a bet? No..." he waved his hand around theatrically, "no technicalities that you can use to wriggle out of it?" Could totally see/hear Wilson saying that : )

And I'm so glad House was wrong...Yet scowling like it still bothered him a bit to lose a bet!

Thanks! Yes, I'm glad House was wrong, and I think secretly he doesn't really mind losing that bet, as much as he likes winning :)

This right here is a lovely, IC image of Wilson.

I love House's scowling over a lost bet, and the fact that they're betting over this at all.

Awesome fic.

Thanks! It does seem the sort of macbre bet they would make, and for once House doesn't *really* mind losing :)

Thanks! I really hope that the five months thing was a little (or lot!) pessimistic on House's part :)

You just know that Wilson is staying alive simply to win the bet and take House's money (which is exactly why House offered double or nothing ;P). I love it.

It's a little extra incentive to Wilson to stay alive, he loves taking money off House :) Thanks, glad you liked it :)

Were you, by any chance, raised on Charles Addams cartoons?! This is so macabre and so "them"! Excellent!

I think they would bet on Wilson's survival, just for that added bit of interest :) If it was anyone else but Wilson he might have to look out for himself because House does like to win his bets :)

Thanks for reading, glad you liked it :)

This is perfect, hon. Down to the little dark details: Wilson is still sick, which is why he gets the good stuff as far as painkillers go.

Shouldn't Wilson give House the extra hundred immediately? It's not like he can do so once he, uh, loses the bet. Guess that's exactly the point ;).

ETA And mem, too. I'm learning to love the finale because of all the wonderful fics that came out of it.

Maybe wilson won't ever lose the bet :) One can only hope... It's a bit of a win-win for house really.

Yeah, I'm loving all the post finale fic too - glad I could finally add a little bit to it :)

He might grumble about paying off the bet but I agree with you, I don't think he really minds :) Thanks for reading!

This is exactly how I want things to go, 5 months at a time forever. No miraculous cures or revelations, but simply Wilson repeatedly outliving his expiration date and enjoying life with House. I was toying with this idea myself, but you've done it perfectly for me here. Thanks!

Yes, i see House & Wilson existing in a sort of timeless not-dead-yet limbo :) I'm sure with House taking care of him Wilson can stretch those five months a long way:) I'd still love to see your take on it though :)

Thanks for reading!
