Title: Every Time
Characters: House/Wilson
Rating: PG-13
Words: 700
Warnings: Choose Not to Warn - but no character death.
Summary: With Wilson's time running out House has a decision to make.
Wilson's Health Status He's sick, but he doesn't die.

Author's Notes: Yet another post-finale scenario although this one isn't very likely. Also answering a weekly prompt from [livejournal.com profile] hw_prompts but saying which one would be a spoiler :)

"When the cancer starts getting really bad…" Wilson says.

House smiles and puts on his helmet and glasses.

"Cancer's boring."

This will be the last night, House thinks. Wilson is getting sicker. His movements are a touch slow and he tires easily. He tries to hide the persistent cough but it's always there, just under the surface - ready to awaken. House knows the signs by now. There’s not much time left.

He lies pressed against Wilson’s naked body, idly running his hands through the unruly hair. He breathes in the scent of him, the feel of him. He’ll miss this. He’ll miss being with him. Until he can be again.

Wilson stirs underneath his hands, awakening from slumber. He turns, still half asleep, and moves closer.

House drops a kiss onto his forehead and Wilson smiles. His eyes open lazily and House feels a pang of regret at the look in those eyes. Maybe he can stay one more day.

"Never thought I'd see the day when Gregory House snuggled me in bed," Wilson says.

"Never thought I'd see the day when James Wilson admitted to being hot for my body." It’s a weak retort because Wilson is looking at him like that. Like he knows everything House is thinking. Like House is the only thing in the world that matters to him.

Wilson smiles that lazy smile again and his hand moves between them, coming to rest at House's groin. A wave of warmth floods through House at his touch. He groans and presses himself into Wilson's hand.

He starts to say something but Wilson moves closer and captures his mouth in a kiss that drives all conscious thought from House's brain.

"I wish... “Wilson says when they finally break apart, and House knows what he means because Wilson always says this. He wishes that the five months weren't draining away. He wishes that they'd been lovers for as long as they'd been friends. He wishes that they had more time.

It's dawn of the next morning when he leaves the cabin. He lights a forbidden cigarette, shivers in the cool air and takes in the coming day. A day he won't see.

In his hand he holds his most precious possession. A gold pocket watch, its cover discoloured with age. A find in one of those odd-ball antique shops that Wilson liked to frequent.

It had been four months into Wilson's illness and there hadn't been long left. He could track Wilson's progress through the shop by the sound of his coughing. Feeling desperate to get away for a moment he'd stepped outside, on the pretence of having a smoke.

The owner had followed him out and pressed the watch on him - her eyes intent with something House couldn't name.

"It will give you what you need," she'd said, looking back into the store where Wilson was. "What you both need. Enough time. Just believe." She’d pressed his hand over the watch and then she’d gone. He’d stared down at the watch and known what he had to do.

He opens the cover of the watch and stares into the old mechanism, the hands are ticking away the seconds. He glances back at the cabin, where Wilson still sleeps. He'll lose him, and then find him again. Over and over. Time will never run out for them.

He closes his eyes and pictures where he wants to go, when he wants to go. Always the same destination.

When he opens his eyes again the cabin is gone, the woods it had rested in are gone. He's getting onto his bike, with Wilson beside him. They're on a bridge, over a river, in the middle of a long road that curves through the trees – stretching forward and back as far as he can see.

"When the cancer starts getting really bad…" Wilson says, as he always does.

House smiles and puts on his helmet and glasses.

"Cancer's boring."

He rides off, knowing that Wilson will follow. Their journey will be different this time, but House knows that soon he'll have Wilson again. He always does.

They have all the time they need.

Well, now. This is interesting. Does Wilson know?

I like it a lot.

I think Wilson doesn't know, because only House travels back in time. Each time is new to Wilson. Which is probably a little unethical on House's behalf really. But when has that ever stopped House?

Glad you liked it, thanks for reading!

Is it impossible to change the past? So he can't go back and make Wilson get a chest x-ray a year earlier?

Interesting story. I like that House can keep his memories and doesn't have to start over and relive it with no knowledge.

So I'm thinking that it's either a very special time-travel assisting watch that only allows House to go back to one point in time :) Or maybe, that House wants this particular period of time over and over. Because if he travels back and saves Wilson's life at an earlier point maybe things won't change between them and House won't have the road trip and won't have Wilson in this way. Either/or :)

this one isn't very likely.
Oh ye muggle of little faith! Don't you believe in time turners?

I wonder how often House had to turn the time back before he dared to make a move on Wilson. Very sweet and hopeful -- I'm sure House doesn't mind living his personal groundhog day as long as there's no danger of it turning into a long dark night.

LOL - no, I haven't heard of time turners - okay, it's very likely then! :)

I feel that maybe he made the move on Wilson on the very first time through those months which is why the woman gave him the watch (true love etc etc), but I figure that every time through House tries to hurry the friends-to-lovers process as much as he can - he'll certainly have a strategy developed to counter any Wilson defensive moves that might come up :)

Thanks for reading!

Yeah, I sometimes resent that the way the series ended means any post-finale fic has to deal with the vexing question of Wilson's health, but I guess it could have been worse...

I really love this. It seems bittersweet to me, that House loves him so much, that he's willing to keep them in the same spot in the lives for a long time.

Very nicely done. You made me think about their relationship with such a little piece. :-)

This is as plausible as many things TPTB threw at us. Seriously, I loved the twist. I agree with Writerdot - it's touching, and lovely, and sad that House would keep reliving those months in order to keep Wilson with him.

The word count should be 700 x 2 or x 3. Read it again to savor the delicate misdirection.

He wishes that they'd been lovers for as long as they'd been friends. He wishes that they had more time. So, I'm thinking House didn't let Wilson in on the watch because Wilson will lapse into friend status? Surely, House must have experimented and come clean about the watch in one of the permutations. lol. How about a sequel? ;-)

I'm thinking that maybe House doesn't tell Wilson about the watch because Wilson might try and talk him out of this particular course of action. Also, it would be a really difficult conversation to have.

"So, it's like this, Wilson. I have a time traveling watch. So I'm here from the future."

"Seriously?"

"Yes. And one more thing, in the future we are doing the dirty. So, come on, drop those pants and let's get on with it."

"????"

Cue a trip back to Mayfield for House....

Thanks for reading and the mem :)

I can understand why House would want to always take them back to that point; it's the tine where he starts to finally have Wilson completely to himself. No wives or girlfriends, no patients and responsibilities, just he and "Jimmy", and the bikes and the road. To House, it would be the one perfect time in his life. And it is, I suspect, for Wilson too.

I see the final episode as a gift that Shore, and Laurie, gave to the fans and especially the fan writers. True, House is "dead", and Wilson is dying; but once they ride off together and the screen goes black, it's now up to us to decide what happens next.

I particularly like this decision.

I guess the point where I differ is the whole 'you are going to die in five months there is no hope' thing - they didn't even leave it a little ambiguous. I'd love the road trip scenario without that.

Anyway, I suspect that you are right about House's motivations here - after all the stresses and drama of the last however many years the road trip is a time just to be together with Wilson, why wouldn't he want to keep reliving it?

Thanks for reading!

Thing is…House had a point, Wilson tried once…one crazy "do-it-yourself" radical treatment, and when it didn't work, he gave up. But that doesn't mean that a regular, conservative course of treatment wouldn't possibly work. The problem was that Wilson had seen too much, witnessed too many people suffer through treatments that failed, and he made the decision not to have any more treatment.

I'm just hoping that once they hit the road, and the enormity of what House has done for him sinks in, he may decide that he wants more time with House, and will try to fight for that time.

Sorry..I've been through something very much like this…for real.

Somewhere, I have a draft that was going to be exactly what Kathleen described. They're a couple days out on the road and Wilson realizes what he's potentially throwing away, and changes his mind -- and lives.

Meanwhile, this story of yours has me wondering if House figures out how to go back, perhaps six months before Wilson's diagnosis, and get him to submit to testing before it's too late. And if he does, it'll be because he knows it isn't fair, doing what he's been doing ... and because he's now reasonably sure he'll be able to start the relationship he wants, even if Wilson isn't dying. It'll be tricky, though.

I'm pretty sure someone wrote one where House (and Wilson?) travel back in time and get that chest x-ray done in time.
