Fic : Mother's Day
May. 8th, 2011 10:14 pmTitle: Mother's Day
Words: 800 ( 8 drabbles of 100 words each)
Rating : PG
Spoilers : For seventh season - aired episodes only
Pairing : None
Warnings : Angst, general misery
Summary : Eight drabbles depicting Mother's Day, one for each cast member and one extra
Author's note : Happy Mother's Day if it's Mother's day where you are :) These drabbles won't cheer you up if you need cheering up, they are basically our characters getting all angsty and depressed over Mother's Day. I wanted to write something a bit more upbeat for Mother's day but let's face it - they just aren't happy people!
Chase
He wakes up with a woman he met last night. He knows he'll never see her again. His head pounds from his hangover, there are empty bottles by the bed. Through the fog that hangs over his thoughts he remembers it's Mother's Day. He has no-one to say the words to, his mum is long dead, killed by her drinking, and the children he'd wanted with Cameron will never be. He strokes the hair of the woman lying asleep by his side, it's small comfort when she wakes and they have sex. He wants more.
Foreman
He's alone when he takes flowers to his Mom's grave. By the end she didn't even know who he was. He'd visited her like his Dad had asked and she hadn't recognised him, there had been nothing of his Mom left. He puts the flowers on her grave, looks around at the flowers that have appeared all over the cemetery today. He wishes his Mom was still alive to hug him and tell him that everything will be okay. I miss you Mom he whispers to her grave, I should have been a better son.
Taub
He sends a card and flowers, makes a phone call and excuses. He's too busy to go and see her (he isn't), he has to work (he doesn't), he'll be there for Thanksgiving (knowing he won't), or her birthday (he wasn't there for the last one) , he misses her (lies are easy for him). He's meeting a woman tonight who's not Rachel, who'll never be Rachel. He doesn't want to see his Mom - he doesn't want to see the disappointment in her eyes as he walks in alone.
Thirteen
She gets plastered, that's the only way she can cope. She doesn't want to remember her Mom, she doesn't want to remember how she looked, how she acted, how she died. She doesn't want to think of the woman that she will soon become, or of children she will never have. She doesn't want to remember how happy they were once, her Mom, herself, her brother. Now two are dead, the other is the walking dead. She lifts a glass and toasts - 'Happy Mother's Day Mom' - the empty room echoes it back.
Cuddy
They sit around the table at dinner, three generations of the Cuddy women. Her mother, herself and her daughter. Rachel is far too young to buy a present, and Arlene would never think to buy one on her behalf. Her own gift to her mother had been met with a small smile, and a barbed comment. She looks at Rachel and hopes that her daughter can find happiness when she is older. Happiness that she has never had. She doesn't think about House, about the dreams she'd had for their future, about the family they will never be.
Wilson
Wilson visits his mother, like a good son should. His visit with his Mom is short, she's on her way to see her eldest son, the one that provided her with a long term daughter-in-law and grandchildren. The successful one. He calls his three ex-Mothers-in-Law, because he's stayed on good terms with them all. Sam's Mom sounds relieved that he is no longer with her daughter. He thinks about calling Amber's Mom but what can he say to a woman who lost her daughter too young? She is probably wishing that Amber had never met him.
House
It takes a couple of whiskey shots, with a Vicodin chaser before he can call his mother. She gently chides him for calling so late, for never visiting, for not being the son she would have wanted. She asks him how he is, whether there is anyone new in his life. He tells her he is fine, no there isn't. He hangs up the phone and downs another shot. His mother will never have grandchildren, she barely has a son. Another person he has disappointed. The Vicodin and alcohol wrap him in numbness, he falls asleep on the couch.
Nathan and Emma
Dad takes them to visit Mom in the hospital. They buy flowers from the gift shop, they're a bit wilted but Mom won't mind. She's been really sick for a long time, there's been a whole lot of doctors looking after her and yesterday the scary doctor who walks with a cane came and cured her. Dad says she can come home soon and she's going to live for a real long time now. When they give her the flowers she starts crying but Dad says it's okay - she's just really happy.
